ORGL 600: Foundations of Leadership

Dr. David Houglum

This class introduced me to Paulo Freire and Parker Palmer, both of whom continue to accompany me on my leadership journey. Each taught that love, listening, and dialogue are key to becoming more effective, human-centered, holistic leader. Relationships centered on openness, sharing, and transparency are key. Maybe even more importantly, I learned that none of this work can be done well if I don’t start with working on myself.

All of these ideas are contained in my Five Frames paper in which I used Dr. Carey’s framework and Parker Palmer’s The Courage to Teach to problem solve founder’s syndrome in nonprofits.

Founding itself upon love, humility, and faith, dialogue becomes a horizontal relationship of which mutual trust between the dialoguers is the logical consequence.
